Walter Burke
Biography
Walter Burke was an American character actor whose stage, film, and television career lasted more than half a century. Born in Brooklyn, he began acting as a teenager and made his Broadway debut in Dearest Enemy in the 1925 to 1926 season, later appearing on Broadway in Billy Budd and Major Barbara and performing with the American Opera Company. His Irish ancestry often led to roles as an Irishman or Englishman, and his slight build, voice, and face made him recognizable even in minor parts. He entered Hollywood films in 1948 with The Naked City, and in 1949 he took a memorable part in the Oscar-winning All the King's Men (1949). From 1951 until 1980 he worked mainly in television, appearing in episodes of 103 different series, though he was never a series regular.
