Henry Jones

Biography

Henry Jones spent his career on the stage, in films and on television, born in New Jersey and raised in Philadelphia. He began with the Hedgerow Theatre near Philadelphia and reached Broadway in Maurice Evans's 1938 Hamlet. He originated the part of handyman Leroy Jessup in The Bad Seed on Broadway and played it again in the 1956 film. Other stage credits included Sunrise at Campobello, which won him a Tony Award for best featured actor in a play and an Outer Critics Circle Award. His films ranged from The Girl Can't Help It (1956), 3:10 to Yuma (1957) and Vertigo (1958) to Support Your Local Sheriff! (1969), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), Nine to Five (1980) and Arachnophobia (1990). On television he was best known as the title character's father-in-law on the sitcom Phyllis.
