Plot summary
Jim Douglass arrives in Rio Arriba, where Alfonso Parral, Bill Zachary, Ed Taylor and Lujan sit in jail awaiting execution for a murder. Douglass, a rancher, believes the four men killed his wife six months earlier, and Sheriff Eloy Sanchez lets him into the cell to look at them. In town he meets Josefa Velarde, a woman he knew years before in New Orleans. The town has brought in an executioner from elsewhere, and he goes to the jail to measure the prisoners. The man attacks the sheriff, and in the struggle the four inmates seize the keys and break out, carrying Emma away with them. The wounded sheriff interrupts a church service with the news, and the townspeople form a posse. Douglass joins the pursuit the next morning.
