Herb Vigran
Biography
Herb Vigran was an American character actor whose Hollywood career spanned the 1930s to the 1980s and included more than 350 film and television appearances. Born in Cincinnati, he grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and earned a law degree from Indiana University before turning to acting. Using the name Herbert Vigran, he appeared in three Broadway plays, including Cyrano de Bergerac, then moved to Hollywood and began in radio on series like Five Star Final and Silver Theatre. With his bushy eyebrows and balding head, he was often cast as middle-aged everymen such as police officers, small-time crooks, judges, and bartenders. He was widely known as Lurvy in Charlotte's Web (1973), and his film work also included Monsieur Verdoux (1947), White Christmas (1954), and Go, Johnny, Go! (1959), where he worked with Chuck Berry. On television, he made hundreds of appearances and had a recurring role as Judge Brooker on Gunsmoke from 1970 to 1975.

Vigran earned a Bachelor of Laws from Indiana University School of Law in 1933, but chose acting instead of a legal career.
First role
Vigran began on Broadway, then went to Hollywood with only his Broadway acting experience and no money. His first radio work came in 1937 on Five Star Final and Our Gal Sunday.
First role
Vigran paid $5 for a recording of the radio drama Silver Theatre and used it as a demo to land other jobs with his unique voice.
Beyond film
Vigran also voiced "Whitney's boss" in Arrowhead bottled water commercials. These ads aired on both television and radio during the 1960s.
