Don Collier
Biography
Don Collier was an American actor whose work centered on Western movies and NBC television series. Born in Santa Monica, California, he held jobs as a geologist, logger, ranch hand and surveyor and served in the Navy and Merchant Marine. He first appeared in films as an extra, then spent about three years training with a drama group run by Estelle Harman. His ranch background helped him perform his own fights, horseback riding and wagon driving without stunt doubles. On television he was ranch hand Sam Butler on The High Chaparral, William Tompkins in The Young Riders, and deputy Will Foreman in Outlaws. He also appeared in the World War II miniseries The Winds of War (1983) and War and Remembrance (1988 to 1989). His movie credits included El Dorado (1966), The War Wagon (1967), The Undefeated (1969) and Tombstone (1993). Later he narrated The Desert Speaks and performed a one-man stage show, Confessions of an Acting Cowboy.

Own stunts
Because he had worked as a ranch hand, Collier could handle his own fighting, ride horses and drive a wagon pulled by a team of horses, so directors and producers liked him and he needed no stunt doubles.
A change of course
Collier started doing occasional TV commercials in the 1970s. For Hubba Bubba bubble gum, he played the amusing character the Gum Fighter for eight years.
Beyond film
Collier's later work included narrating The Desert Speaks, a documentary series made for the University of Arizona, and giving a one-man stage performance called Confessions of an Acting Cowboy.
