Plot summary
Three years after Frank Pierce had him wrongfully imprisoned and took his land, former rancher Taw Jackson comes back to his hometown. Pierce's holdings now include gold deposits on that land, and Jackson means to rob the war wagon, the armored stagecoach that carries a $500,000 shipment of gold dust under mounted guard. Wes Fletcher, an elderly driver in Pierce's employ, passes him information from inside. At the crew's first meeting Fletcher brings along Kate, his teenage wife. Jackson's crew takes shape: Lomax, a gunslinger and safecracker who once shot him on Pierce's orders, Levi Walking Bear, a Kiowa translator rescued from Mexican bandits, and Billy Hyatt, a teenage drunkard who knows explosives.
