Plot summary
In the winter of early 1951, a platoon of American infantrymen is sent to hold a mountain chokepoint while the rest of its unit gets across an exposed bridge. Subzero temperatures and frostbite wear on the men, and they come under enemy fire. Corporal Denno is among the platoon, as are Sergeant Rock, Sergeant Lonergan, the medic John Wheeler and Lt. Gibbs. The men are given the job of laying a minefield, and keeping track of the buried mines proves difficult. Denno has no wish to lead, and the officers and sergeants above him carry the responsibility.
