Plot summary
Deputy U.S. Marshal Mac Bovard is known as the Hangman because the men he tracks down go to the gallows. Three of the four outlaws from a fatal robbery are caught, and two have already hanged. The third prisoner refuses to name Butterfield, a man whose face Bovard has never seen, so Bovard rides to Fort Kenton to ask the Army for help. Butterfield once served there as a cavalry trooper. Selah Jennison, his former girlfriend, does the fort's laundry and turns down Bovard's offer of a five hundred dollar reward. In town, a freight driver named Johnny Bishop catches the marshal's notice, and Sheriff Buck Weston cautions that the people think highly of Bishop.
