Percy Helton
Biography
Percy Helton was an American actor of stage, film and television whose face and voice were among the most familiar in Hollywood in the 1950s. Born in Manhattan, he started acting at the age of two in vaudeville acts alongside his British-born father, and he was later a cast member in the Broadway production Julie BonBon and appeared in the Broadway plays The Poor Nut and To the Ladies. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War I, where he performed with a company of soldier-actors, he moved into character roles, a shift prompted by a change in his voice. His films included Miracle on 34th Street (1947) and the films noir Criss Cross (1949), The Crooked Way (1949), The Set-Up (1949), Wicked Woman (1953) and Kiss Me Deadly (1955), plus the comic Western Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). He also made three guest appearances on Perry Mason.

Helton joined the U.S. Army in World War I and went to Europe with the American Expeditionary Forces. His duty with the 77th Infantry Division's 305th Field Artillery earned him the Distinguished Service Cross.
