Plot summary
Harun rides into Baghdad carrying a medallion his dying father took from the man who killed him in the fighting between Basra and Baghdad. Shopkeeper Barcus lets him choose any item in his shop for ten dinars, and Harun picks a golden sword hidden under rags that cuts through solid metal, though Barcus says the markings on the blade should be read first. In the palace, Vizier Jafar urges the Caliph to make war on Basra and suggests that the Caliph's rebellious daughter, Princess Khairuzan, be married to his son Hadi. Khairuzan leaves the palace in boy's clothes and takes Harun's horse.
