Plot summary
In Los Angeles, Dave Purvis has worked out a scheme to take the cash carried by an armored car at Wrigley Field on the last stop of its route. He draws in Benny McBride, who recruits two small-time crooks, Al Mapes and Ace Foster. Benny needs the money for a plan of his own: he hopes to get his wife, Yvonne LeDoux, to come back to him. She is a dancer who has taken up with Purvis. The holdup unfolds as laid out, until a police patrol car arrives. Gunfire breaks out, Purvis shoots a policeman, and the gang gets clear. Lieutenant Jim Cordell, that officer's partner, throws himself into the case and treats Danny Ryan, the rookie assigned to him, with contempt.

- Before the film was made, RKO had bought the story under the title Gravesend Bay in March 1949, and Robert Ryan was originally intended to play the rookie cop Danny Ryan.
- The screenplay was drawn from a story by Charles Pete and Richard Carroll about a $500,000 robbery, which was itself based on a real 1934 robbery at the Rubel Ice Company.
