Plot summary
In a small town, Elwood P. Dowd spends his time taking his best friend Harvey, a six-foot white rabbit, to bars and introducing him to strangers. Harvey is a púca out of Celtic mythology, benign but mischievous, and almost nobody can see him. Veta, Elwood's sister, and Myrtle Mae, his niece, share his large estate, and his habit has turned the three of them into social outcasts. After Elwood ruins a party the two women arranged in secret, Veta has him taken to a local sanatorium to be committed. There the attending psychiatrist, Dr. Sanderson, listens to Veta's account of life with Elwood, who is forever on the point of introducing his friend to whoever is in the room.
