Plot summary
In Boston in 1849, Jack Flagg and his sister Arabella lose their parents. Jack stows away aboard a vessel bound for San Francisco, drawn by the California gold rush, and the household butler Eric Griffin ends up on the voyage too. Griffin makes himself useful to the captain as cook and servant. Quentin Bartlett, an actor among the passengers, has a map to a gold mine, and the crooked Judge Higgins takes it. Griffin, Jack and Quentin go after the judge. Arabella makes her own way to San Francisco and takes a job performing at a saloon. Griffin meets the stocky bully Mountain Ox and drops him with one punch, and the feat wins him the name Bullwhip.
