Harry Cording
Biography
Harry Cording was an English actor who was born in Wellington, Somerset, and began his film career in Los Angeles after working as a steamship steward. His first screen role came as a henchman in The Knockout (1925), and he went on to play similar parts. Standing six feet tall with a stocky build and dark eyes, he was often cast as thugs, henchmen, and policemen. His best-known roles were probably Dickon Malbete, Captain of the Guard, in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), and Thamal, the hulking henchman, in The Black Cat (1934). At Universal Pictures in the 1940s he was a contract player, appearing in small parts in many horror films, including The Wolf Man (1941). He also appeared in minor and supporting roles in seven of the twelve Sherlock Holmes movies in which Basil Rathbone starred, and played the antagonist to Kirk Douglas in The Big Trees (1952). He died in 1954.
