Gertrude Astor
Biography
Gertrude Astor was an American character actress who started her career as a trombone player in a woman's band before moving into film. Born in Lakewood, Ohio, she toured with the band, then left it in New York to pursue movie work, initially as an extra. In 1915 she secured a contract with Universal Studios, and over the next several decades appeared in more than 250 films. She became known for comedy roles as aristocrats, gold-diggers, and the heroine's best pal, often towering over her leading men. Her silent highlights included Stage Struck (1925), The Strong Man (1926), and The Cat and the Canary (1927). She also worked at Hal Roach studios with Laurel and Hardy, Our Gang, and Charley Chase, and later played bits in features through the 1960s, including a brief turn in The Scarlet Claw (1944) and her final appearance in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. She died in 1977.
