Tom Tyler
Biography
Tom Tyler was an American actor who became a leading man in low-budget Westerns and a screen superhero in serials. Born in Port Henry, New York, he arrived in California around 1924 and worked as a prop man and extra before signing with Film Booking Offices of America in 1925. He starred in many silent Westerns for FBO and later made low-budget Westerns and serials for companies including Monogram, Universal, Reliable Pictures and Victory Pictures. In supporting roles he appeared in Stagecoach (1939), The Westerner (1940), The Mummy's Hand (1940), San Antonio (1945), Badman's Territory (1946), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) and Trail of Robin Hood (1950). He starred as Captain Marvel in the 1941 serial The Adventures of Captain Marvel, the first film to adapt a comic-book superhero, and his last leading role was in The Phantom (1943). He died in 1954.

A first
Tyler, an amateur weightlifter backed by the Los Angeles Athletic Club in the late 1920s, set a world amateur record in the right-hand clean and jerk with a 213 pound lift. In 1928 he took the AAU heavyweight title with 760 pounds, a mark that lasted fourteen years.
Getting ready for a role
Tyler's most unusual part was the mummy Kharis in Universal's The Mummy's Hand, released in 1940. The studio gave him the role because it thought he looked like a younger Boris Karloff, matching stock footage of Karloff from The Mummy.
A role that slipped away
MGM gave strong thought to casting Tyler as Tarzan in its 1932 movie Tarzan the Ape Man, though the part did not come his way.
