Biography

Billy Bevan was an Australian-born actor who came to American silent comedy by way of the stage. Born in Orange, a country town in New South Wales, he toured for eight years in Australian light opera before sailing to America in 1912, and he made his first screen appearances at the Sigmund Lubin studio in 1916. When that company disbanded he joined Mack Sennett's comedies, where his pantomime and timing made him a star by 1922, typically wearing a derby hat and drooping mustache and often paired with Andy Clyde. He introduced the oyster routine in Wandering Willies (1926). Talking pictures ended his starring career, and for about twenty years he worked as a character actor in rowdy cockney and affable Englishman parts, among them Terror by Night (1946). He died in 1957.

  1. A first

    Bevan was the first to do the "oyster" routine, in which a bowl of "fresh oyster stew" comes to life and fights the person eating it, in the Sennett comedy Wandering Willies (1926). Curly Howard, Lou Costello, and Huntz Hall later performed it.

  2. About the name

    Bevan went on the stage young. In Sydney he spent eight years in Australian light opera, where he performed as Willie Bevan.

  3. Big break

    After the company broke up, Bevan took supporting roles in Mack Sennett movie comedies. A quiet scene-stealer and expressive pantomimist, he drew attention, and by 1922 he was a Sennett star.

  4. A role that slipped away

    When Sennett scrapped every contract to refit his studio for talking pictures, Bevan was left without his starring roles. He had already finished a number of silent shorts, and these came out gradually during 1929.

  5. A change of course

    In 1912, Bevan sailed to America as a member of the Pollard's Lilliputian Opera Company, and he toured Canada at a later point in his career.
