Plot summary
Roger Morland has no gift for words, so his fellow soldier Alan Quinton writes the letters that Roger sends to Victoria Remington. Alan has never met Victoria, and he puts into the letters what he cannot say to anyone in person. He tells Roger that Victoria will be let down by the man behind the letters, and Roger heads to England for paratrooper training. Alan is wounded on the Italian front and learns that Roger is dead. Back in London, he cannot settle into civilian life, and his engagement to Helen Wentworth ends. He stays at a farm in Essex that belongs to his aunt. His brother brings him along to a party, where he talks drunkenly about the letters, and Dilly Carson, who knows which woman he means, tells him the letters had a part in a murder.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Love Letters (1945)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Ayn Rand's screenplay for Love Letters drew on Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac, which she had admired since reading it in French as a youth: as in that play, the heroine loves a soldier she believes wrote letters that were actually written by another man.
- Joseph Cotten was Hal Wallis's second choice for the male lead; his first, Gregory Peck, turned the film down for being too close to Spellbound. Wallis borrowed Cotten and Jennifer Jones from David O. Selznick, who he said was difficult and tried to exert control over the film.
- Victor Young's melody for "Love Letters", with lyrics by Edward Heyman, was a hit for singer Dick Haymes in September 1945 and has since been recorded by Nat King Cole, Elvis Presley, Elton John and Sinéad O'Connor, among many others; Ketty Lester's version turns up in David Lynch's Blue Velvet.
