Wallace Ford

Biography

Wallace Ford was an English-American vaudeville and stage performer who became a screen actor, usually cast as wise-cracking characters. Born in Bolton, England, and raised in Canada, he joined a traveling vaudeville troupe as a boy and later performed on Broadway, including a lead in Abie's Irish Rose. His credited film debut came with Possessed (1931), and he soon starred in Freaks (1932). He worked steadily for over 30 years, with lead roles in B movies and supporting parts in larger pictures such as Shadow of a Doubt (1943), The Lost Patrol (1934), The Informer (1935), and Spellbound (1945). In 1938 he returned to Broadway to play George in Of Mice and Men. Later he moved into Westerns and television, and his final film role, in A Patch of Blue (1965), brought a Golden Laurel nomination.

According to Ford's own account, he ran away for the last time when he was 11 and joined the Winnipeg Kiddies, a vaudeville troupe touring Canada, where he got his training as a performer.
