Plot summary
Holger Brandt is a celebrated virtuoso violinist, married to Margit and the father of Ann Marie and Eric. During a trip home he meets Anita Hoffman, who teaches piano to Ann Marie, and her playing impresses him. He invites her to join him on his next concert tour, and she accepts. The two begin touring together, and a passionate relationship develops.

- Leslie Howard could not play the violin, so the production brought in a professional violinist, Al Sack, who bore a striking resemblance to him, to teach him proper posture and bowing. For the closeups Sack knelt out of camera view and did the fingering himself, his left hand appearing alongside Howard's bowing arm and profile.
- The musical duets were dubbed by professional musicians, yet Ingrid Bergman's hand positions are correct because she plays the full piano parts on screen, for Edvard Grieg's Concerto in A minor and Christian Sinding's "Rustle of Spring".
- The film's title piece by Heinz Provost had won a contest connected to the production of the original film, and the remake features several orchestrations of it.
