Gladys Cooper

Biography

Gladys Cooper was an English actress who also worked as a theatrical manager and producer. Born in Hither Green, London, she began as a teenage performer in Edwardian musical comedy and pantomime, making her stage debut in 1905. She managed the Playhouse Theatre between 1917 and 1934 and won praise in the 1920s for plays by W. Somerset Maugham, with a major critical success in 1922 in The Second Mrs. Tanqueray. After starring in the West End and on Broadway, she moved to Hollywood in 1940 and often played disapproving aristocratic women. Her films included Rebecca (1940), Now, Voyager (1942), The Song of Bernadette (1943), Separate Tables (1958) and My Fair Lady (1964). She was nominated for three Academy Awards as Best Supporting Actress and for two Tony Awards for The Chalk Garden and A Passage to India. She also appeared in The Twilight Zone and The Rogues and in 1967 was appointed a Dame Commander. She died in 1971.

Big break
Cooper did not find major critical success until 1922, when she was in her mid-thirties, in Arthur Wing Pinero's The Second Mrs. Tanqueray.
First role
In 1905 Cooper began her stage career, going on tour with Seymour Hicks in the musical Bluebell in Fairyland. She also became a popular photographic model.
Behind the award
In 1967, when she was 79, Cooper received the title of Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire, the DBE.
