Plot summary
Charlotte Hollis, a wealthy spinster, keeps to herself in the family's old plantation house in Hollisport, Louisiana, where she has stayed since her father, Sam Hollis, died thirty-six years ago. Thirty-seven years ago her lover, John Mayhew, was bludgeoned to death in the summer house while her father was hosting a party. The murder was never solved, and the town blames her. Her housekeeper, Velma Crowther, and Dr. Drew Bayliss, a friend and physician, are the only people who see her regularly. The Louisiana Highway Commission has ordered her off the land to build a new interstate, and she has threatened the demolition crew with a rifle. She summons her cousin Miriam Deering to help her fight the state in Baton Rouge.

- Joan Crawford, replaced as Miriam, said she only learned of her firing from a news radio broadcast, yet a brief shot of her remains in the film, sitting in the taxi in the wide shot of Miriam's arrival at the house.
- After Loretta Young and Vivien Leigh were unable or unwilling to take over Joan Crawford's role as Miriam, Robert Aldrich flew to Olivia de Havilland's home in Switzerland to persuade her; she agreed and flew to Los Angeles to begin filming.
- When Joan Crawford was hospitalized with an upper respiratory ailment, Robert Aldrich hired a private investigator to track her and determine whether she was actually ill.
- Filming was halted early on by a third-party lawsuit from Paramount Pictures against Bette Davis over her commitment to complete additional filming on Where Love Has Gone (1964); shooting resumed once it was resolved.
