Biography

Candice Bergen is an American actress who began her career in fashion modeling and appeared on Vogue covers before making her screen debut in The Group (1966). She went on to star in films such as The Sand Pebbles (1966), Soldier Blue (1970), Carnal Knowledge (1971), and The Wind and the Lion (1975). Her performance in Starting Over (1979) brought an Academy Award nomination, and she was nominated for a BAFTA for Gandhi (1982). On television, she received two Golden Globe Awards and five Primetime Emmy Awards for her lead role in the CBS sitcom Murphy Brown, and she later took the part of Shirley Schmidt in Boston Legal, an ABC drama. Her Broadway credits include Hurlyburly in 1984 and revivals of The Best Man and Love Letters. Other films include Miss Congeniality (2000), Sweet Home Alabama (2002), The Women (2008), Bride Wars (2009), Book Club (2018), and Let Them All Talk (2020).
