Plot summary
A young Englishman, Nicholas Urfe, arrives on the Greek island of Phraxos to teach, having left behind Anne, his emotionally unstable lover. There he meets Maurice Conchis, a recluse who keeps an estate on the far side of the island and lives there with a young woman named Lily. Visits to the estate bring a series of experiences that grow stranger each time, several of them restagings of moments from Conchis' past. Nicholas tries to work out what Conchis is: a psychiatrist, a film producer, an admirer of the Nazis, or a magician with power over the lives of those around him. The odd events begin to happen away from the estate as well.

- Guy Green said Richard Zanuck had the last reel of The Magus removed after seeing the abrupt ending of Blow Up. The director believed the film would have been more successful had the original ending been kept.
- Director Guy Green disagreed with the producers of The Magus over its interpretation: they wanted more of a thriller, while he wanted something more Fellini-like.
- John Fowles, who wrote the screenplay for The Magus as well as the novel, was extremely disappointed with the film and laid most of the blame on director Guy Green.
