Biography

Meg Ryan is an American actress who built a career playing witty, charismatic women, especially in romantic comedies. Born in Fairfield, Connecticut, she made her film debut in Rich and Famous (1981) and then appeared on the soap opera As the World Turns. In the 1980s she had roles in Top Gun (1986) and When Harry Met Sally... (1989). During the 1990s she starred in Joe Versus the Volcano (1990), Sleepless in Seattle (1993), When a Man Loves a Woman (1994), French Kiss (1995), Anastasia (1997), You've Got Mail (1998), and City of Angels (1998). She later directed and starred in Ithaca (2015), and she directed and returned to the screen in What Happens Later (2023). She earned three Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical.

A role that slipped away
Ryan turned down the part of FBI agent Clarice Starling, the main character in The Silence of the Lambs, because she thought the film's themes were too gruesome and violent.
Big break
Ryan took her first leading role in the 1989 romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally..., starring opposite comic actor Billy Crystal. The part brought her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical.
