Plot summary
In 1958, Marla Mabrey, a Baptist beauty queen from a small town, comes to Los Angeles with her strict mother Lucy under a contract with Howard Hughes' studio, paid four hundred dollars a week while she waits for a screen test. Frank Forbes, who meets them at the airport, becomes her regular driver, taking her to the singing and dancing lessons arranged for Hughes' contract starlets. Frank is a devout Methodist engaged to his childhood sweetheart, and Levar Mathis, who works for Hughes, keeps reminding him that staff and actresses are not to grow close. With Lucy back in Virginia, Frank and Marla spend more time together, and Hughes calls Marla to a private meeting to hear about her ambitions.
