Trailer

Plot summary

With the crew of the Discovery mission lost near Jupiter nine years earlier, the United States and the Soviet Union each prepare a new expedition to that planet. The Soviet ship Leonov can launch a year earlier than the American ship, but only the Americans can revive HAL 9000, the computer blamed for the first mission's failure. Because Discovery is expected to crash into the moon Io before the American crew could reach it, the Soviets agree to take three Americans aboard: Heywood Floyd, who is held responsible for the disaster, engineer Walter Curnow, and Dr. Chandra, the creator of HAL.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about 2010: The Year We Make Contact (1984)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Arthur C. Clarke, author of the novels for 2001 and 2010, appears as a man on a park bench feeding pigeons outside the White House, and a Time cover about American-Soviet tension shows the President of the United States portrayed by Clarke and the Soviet Premier by Stanley Kubrick.
  • Peter Hyams contacted both Clarke and Kubrick for their blessings before making the film: he had a long conversation with Stanley and would only do it if it met with his approval, and said he would not have thought of doing the film without Kubrick's blessing.
  • While writing the screenplay in 1983, Hyams in Los Angeles and Clarke in Sri Lanka discussed the planning and production almost daily by e-mail, then a pioneering medium, using Kaypro II computers and direct-dial modems; their correspondence was published in 1984 as The Odyssey File.
  • To stand in for a highland gorilla, Hyams nearly used an orangutan in prosthetics, but Clarke worried it would prompt comparisons to the opening sequence of 2001; the pair discussed penguins and bees before Hyams got MGM to let him build a set around the old Esther Williams tank.
  • Hyams originally intended to film the opening scene at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, which at the time housed the world's largest radio telescope, but after visiting there in 1983 he told Clarke the site was unsuitable because it was so filthy.
  • Tony Banks, keyboardist for the band Genesis, was initially commissioned to do the soundtrack for the film, but his material was rejected and David Shire was then selected to compose and conduct the score.
