Biography

Chevy Chase is an American comedian, actor and writer who first drew wide notice on Saturday Night Live, where he was part of the original cast and turned the Weekend Update desk into one of the program's signatures. That work brought him two Primetime Emmy Awards from four nominations. He left the show early in its second season and became a leading film comic, earning a Golden Globe nomination for Foul Play (1978). His later roles included Ty Webb in Caddyshack (1980) and Clark Griswold in the Vacation pictures, whom he played from 1983 to 2015. He starred in Fletch (1985) and later in Fletch Lives (1989). Among his other successes were Seems Like Old Times (1980), Funny Farm (1988), Spies Like Us (1985) and ¡Three Amigos! (1986). He was twice the host of the Academy Awards, in 1987 and 1988. A string of 1990s flops gave way to renewed fame as Pierce Hawthorne on Community from 2009 to 2014.

    Chevy Chase turned down the role of Eric "Otter" Stratton in National Lampoon's Animal House, a part written with him in mind, to make Foul Play instead; Tim Matheson took the role.

    Chase helped start an early underground comedy group called Channel One in 1967, and he was part of the ensemble.

    In 1987, Chase's Cornelius Productions made a non-exclusive first-refusal deal with Warner Bros. to develop four feature projects, and a fifth project was set up at Universal Pictures.

  4. Beyond film

    In 1986, Chevy Chase joined Paul Simon in a second music video for "You Can Call Me Al." Chase does the lip-syncing for every one of Simon's lyrics in that video.
