Andy Devine
Biography
Andy Devine was an American character actor who worked largely in Westerns and was known for his raspy, crackly voice. Born in Flagstaff, he played football at Santa Clara University before semiprofessional football under the pseudonym Jeremiah Schwartz led to an early substantial part in The Spirit of Notre Dame in 1931. He made more than 400 film appearances and was generally cast in comic roles. He was notable as Cookie, Roy Rogers's sidekick, in ten features, and his credits included Stagecoach (1939), A Star Is Born (1937), Island in the Sky (1953), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), How the West Was Won (1962), and the voice of Friar Tuck in Robin Hood (1973). On television he played Jingles in The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok, the series that ran from 1951 to 1958, and hosted Andy's Gang from 1955 to 1960. He also performed on stage in Show Boat in 1957. Devine died in 1977.
