Plot summary
At a Christian mission in rural China in 1935, almost every white resident is a woman, and the strict Miss Agatha Andrews runs the post. Charles Pether teaches there and had wanted to be a preacher; his wife Florrie, forty-two, is expecting their first child. The doctor who arrives is Dr. Cartwright, a Chicago woman who smokes, drinks, swears and wears pants. She and Andrews are at odds at once, and Emma Clark, the only young staff member, is fascinated by her. Cartwright tells Pether that Florrie's age makes a modern maternity ward safer for the birth. When the warlord Tunga Khan burns a nearby British mission, Andrews takes in its survivors, but only for a time.
