Jeanette Nolan

Biography

Jeanette Nolan was an American actress who started out at the Pasadena Playhouse and, while studying at Los Angeles City College, first acted on radio in 1932, when station KHJ carried a transcontinental broadcast of Omar Khayyam. She became a familiar radio voice, with regular roles in serials and guest parts in many more, and her film debut came as Lady Macbeth in Orson Welles's Macbeth (1948). The film drew withering reviews at the time, yet her screen career flourished in supporting parts, and viewers of film noir knew her as the corrupt wife of a police officer in Fritz Lang's The Big Heat (1953). Nominated four times for Emmy Awards, she had roles in The Virginian (1962 to 1971) and Dirty Sally (1974), and her television work ran to more than three hundred appearances. Her last film was The Horse Whisperer (1998).

Nolan's first film role was Lady Macbeth in Orson Welles' 1948 Macbeth, drawn from Shakespeare's play. Reviews for her and the film were withering then, yet her screen career flourished in mostly supporting parts.
