Plot summary
In 1898, the 10th Cavalry, a segregated African-American unit of convicted soldiers under Jesse Lee, is sent into the fighting in Cuba. When Jesse asks Colonel Graham for permission to pull the men back, Graham sets a condition: Jesse must shoot a white prisoner. Jesse will not, and shoots the cigar from the man's mouth instead. The unit is then ordered to take a Spanish gold shipment while dressed as civilians. Jesse and the others slip out of Cuba with the gold and reach New Orleans, where Little J falls in with a gambler called Father Time. Jesse leaves for a town out west, and the others follow him.

- Melvin Van Peebles, the father of the film's director Mario Van Peebles, recorded the song "Cruel Jim Crow" for it, his first music recording in 20 years after his 1974 album What the....You Mean I Can't Sing?!, and it led to his 1995 album Ghetto Gothic.
- The Western Posse was the first film to be released by Gramercy Pictures, the distributor that would eventually become Focus Features.
