Plot summary
Rosie Velez, a dance-hall girl, is lost in the desert when gunman Abel Wood comes across her and helps her to safety. Riding a donkey, she joins his search for gold, and the two reach Chili Verde, where Marguerita Ventura runs a saloon. Word travels that gold is buried, and Hard Case Williams and his gang want it. Abel wants it too, and the outlaws stand in his way.

- Edith Massey was cast as Big Ed but died shortly after her screen test. Paul Bartel had been uneasy about casting her in the first place because he thought it would look too much like a John Waters film without John Waters.
- John Waters was asked to direct Lust in the Dust but refused the job, because he had not written the script for the film himself.
- Lust in the Dust took its title from the nickname that had been given to King Vidor's 1946 film Duel in the Sun.
