Victor Mature
Biography
Victor Mature was an American actor and a top Hollywood leading man in the 1940s and 1950s. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, he trained at the Pasadena Community Playhouse before Hal Roach signed him in 1939. His first lead came as a caveman in One Million B.C. (1940). He appeared in musicals such as No, No, Nanette (1940) and Song of the Islands (1942). For John Ford, he played Doc Holliday opposite Henry Fonda in My Darling Clementine (1946), a performance Darryl Zanuck considered one of his finest. He starred in the film noir Kiss of Death (1947). Cecil B. DeMille cast him in Samson and Delilah (1949), which became the decade's most popular film. He also appeared in The Robe (1953), the first CinemaScope release, and its sequel Demetrius and the Gladiators (1954). After retiring, he returned to send up his own image in After the Fox (1966). His last role was in a 1984 TV movie Samson and Delilah.

Victor Mature was cast as Doc Holliday in My Darling Clementine after withdrawing from a Philip Marlowe adaptation, and Darryl Zanuck considered it one of his finest performances.
Big break
Charles R. Rogers, an agent for Hal Roach, spotted Victor Mature while he acted in To Quito and Back. In September 1939, Mature agreed to a seven-year deal with Roach.
A role that slipped away
Victor Mature was replaced by Richard Egan in the film Untamed after he refused to support Tyrone Power and Susan Hayward, claiming he wanted a vacation.
A change of course
Victor Mature retired from acting at age 46, saying it was not fun anymore and he wanted to become a professional loafer.
