Carleton Young
Biography
Carleton Young was an American character actor known for his deep voice, with some 235 film and television roles to his credit. He grew up in Syracuse, New York, and starred on Broadway in Henry Rosendahl's Yesterday's Orchids in 1934 before his screen debut in The Fighting Marines (1935). In the Billy the Kid series of 1940 and 1941, he portrayed Jeff Travis, the sidekick of the title character, through the first five installments. His many films include Reefer Madness (1936), Flying Leathernecks (1951), 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), The Horse Soldiers (1959) and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), in which he was a newspaper editor and spoke a famous line about printing the legend. He was part of the John Ford Stock Company, starred in the radio crime drama The Whisperer (1951), and finished his career on the television show The Magician in 1973. He died in 1994.
