Plot summary
Rachel Cade travels to the Belgian Congo in 1939 to work as a missionary nurse at a village hospital. The doctor who runs it, Dr. Bikel, dies of heart failure soon after her arrival, and she learns that the hospital has never treated a patient. She slowly wins the trust of the villagers by providing medical care and preaching the gospel. Colonel Henri Derode, the local government official, is distant with her at first and then becomes deeply attached to her. Rachel instead falls in love with Paul Wilton, an American doctor serving in the Royal Air Force, who is shot down and whom she treats as a patient.
