Plot summary
Alec Ramsay's horse, The Black, is taken from the farm where he is stabled, and Sheik Ishak says the stallion is his own stolen property, retrieved at last. Word reaches Alec that the sheik is taking the horse to his kingdom in the Moroccan desert, and the boy hides aboard a plane bound for Casablanca. There new friends disguise him as a local and bring him to Kurr, who leads a rogue tribe called the Uruk and has his own interest in The Black. Kurr lets Alec travel with him, then abandons him in the desert when the truck breaks down. Another driver picks him up, and on the truck he meets Raj, who learned English at university and becomes his friend.
