Scott Wilson

Biography

Scott Wilson was an American actor who worked in film and television. Born in Thomasville, Georgia, he attended Southern Polytechnic State University, studying architecture and playing basketball, then hitchhiked to Los Angeles to pursue acting, taking odd jobs and appearing in local stage productions. Norman Jewison spotted him on stage and gave him his first film role, a man suspected of murder in In the Heat of the Night (1967), and that same year he played the killer Richard Hickock in In Cold Blood (1967). His later films included The Great Gatsby (1974), The Right Stuff (1983), The Exorcist III (1990), Dead Man Walking (1995), The Way of the Gun (2000), The Last Samurai (2003), Junebug (2005), and The Host (2006). He earned a Golden Globe acting nomination for The Ninth Configuration (1980), and on television he played Hershel Greene in The Walking Dead and Abel Johnson in The OA.

Big break
Director Richard Brooks gave Wilson and Blake the starring roles because they were unknown at the time. He passed over better-known actors for the parts, among them Steve McQueen and Paul Newman.
A first
Wilson appeared on the cover of Life magazine on May 12, 1967, at age 25, after the film earned him the spot. On that cover, Truman Capote stands between Wilson and Blake on an empty Kansas highway.
A change of course
Wilson studied architecture and played basketball at Southern Polytechnic State University before hitchhiking to Los Angeles on a whim to pursue acting.
