Plot summary
Valerie Highsmith, the accident-prone daughter of a rich businessman, lands in Puerto Vallarta and phones her father to say she has arrived. She falls from a balcony onto a canvas below, then an encounter with street thieves knocks her out and costs her the memory of who she is. A local criminal, Frank Grimes, takes her away from her hotel. The psychologist Monosoff, aware that Valerie's luck is dreadful, talks her father into sending Eugene Proctor, an accountant on his staff whose luck is just as dreadful, to search for her. The investigator Raymond Campanella is assigned to work alongside him, and the pair meet one mishap after another on the way to Mexico.
