Plot summary
In 1889, Myrl Redding trades horses in the Wyoming Territory, where he lives with his wife Cora, their son Cage and a few ranch hands. Driving a herd to the market at Casper, he finds that Henry Ballard has put a tollbooth on the road across his land and charges ten dollars to pass. Ballard opposes Wyoming statehood, which would limit his business. Myrl cannot pay, so he leaves two horses with Ballard as collateral and the Crow ranch hand Billy to watch over them. Back from Casper, he finds the animals malnourished and beaten and Billy gone. Ballard refuses to pay for their recovery. A lawyer tells Myrl that Judge Wilkins, a friend of Ballard, is unlikely to hear the case at all. The complaint is thrown out.
