Plot summary

Seventeen years after a car accident left her brain-damaged, Grace Bretthorst Jones is released from the state mental hospital into the care of her brother Landy, a baker in a small Missouri town. The hospital director insists Grace cannot cope with the outside world and should be kept away from children, but Landy, who has petitioned the court, believes she has improved. Landy, his daughter Lucy and Carrie Staley, a young visitor from Brooklyn whose father sent her to spend the summer with the family, drive out to collect Grace. At the welcome party Grace is ill at ease, and her wish to see her former husband Dan fades when she learns he has remarried and that his wife Ella Dean is expecting a child. Heavy rain falls almost daily and the town fears the river will flood.
