Plot summary
In 1950, attorney Charles Phalen meets Brushy Bill Roberts, an elderly man seeking a pardon promised to him seventy years earlier. Bill says he is William H. Bonney, known as Billy the Kid, and tells how in 1879 New Mexico Billy rode with a gang that included Arkansas Dave Rudabaugh and Pat Garrett, while Governor Lew Wallace had warrants out for everyone from the Lincoln County War. Wallace offers a pardon in exchange for testimony against the Dolan-Murphy faction, but Billy is tricked into an arrest that gives him no chance to testify. He escapes and frees his old comrades Doc Scurlock and Jose Chavez y Chavez, and the gang sets out for Mexico. Cattle baron John Chisum then offers a thousand dollars for Garrett to hunt Billy down, and Garrett forms a posse.

- Actor Lou Diamond Phillips was badly hurt filming his final scene: gunshots spooked his horse, Arrow, and he was bucked off and dragged 100 feet with his leg caught in a stirrup, then airlifted by helicopter for surgery on his right arm, which was broken in four places.

Kiefer Sutherland reportedly refused to keep playing Doc Scurlock unless his character was killed off in the Stinking Springs shoot-out, so writer John Fusco, who fought the demand, rewrote the scene around Sutherland's scheduling conflicts.- Emilio Estevez first asked Jon Bon Jovi to license his song 'Wanted Dead or Alive' for the soundtrack; Bon Jovi felt the lyrics were wrong for the film and instead wrote a brand-new song, 'Blaze of Glory', performing it on acoustic guitar in the Utah desert for Estevez and Fusco. The song went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The film shows Tom O'Folliard as a young Pennsylvania boy shot by Pat Garrett, played by a 14-year-old Balthazar Getty, but the real O'Folliard was actually 20 to 21 years old and not from Pennsylvania when he died.SPOILER
Jose Chavez y Chavez is portrayed dying of wounds in the film, but the real Chavez y Chavez lived on to age 72, dying in 1924; historical records also show he was as capable with a gun as the other Regulators, even though both films only ever have him fight with knives.
