A construction company near Little Rock employs Lucy Fowler. Her weekends follow a pattern of drinking, a night with someone, and a quiet exit from the motel before daylight. Her grandmother tells her that her father, a shy man who says little to her, is back in town, and Lucy goes with him to his new church.
