Plot summary
On Christmas Eve, 1907, a violent gang overruns Los Tragos, the New Mexico town where Valentine Casey serves as marshal. The visitors are his own outlaw family, there to pay him a disturbing visit, and their arrival forces him to confront the sins of his past. His adoptive father is the outlaw Leland Henry, and his partner is U.S. Christmas. Casey withdraws into the Arizona desert, and from there he reaches Dunfries, where he becomes involved with Adalyne Dunfries, the beautiful niece of a blacksmith and the woman he loves.

- Shortly before production began, the financier backed out and Dwight Yoakam financed South of Heaven, West of Hell himself, partly by selling his Malibu home. His production company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and several crew members filed lawsuits against it in small claims court.
- Dwight Yoakam originally meant Vincent Gallo to play the lead instead of himself, and he had not planned to direct the film either.
- To pay off the debt from making the film, Dwight Yoakam hired a cheaper backing band in 2002, which led to a falling out with his longtime producer, bandleader and guitarist Pete Anderson.
- South of Heaven, West of Hell stands as the only film Dwight Yoakam has starred in, written and directed, making it a singular entry in the musician's filmography.
