Plot summary
In an alternate America circa 1985, President Fremont holds authoritarian power. Nick Brady works in a Berkeley record store and lives modestly with Rachel, his wife, and their baby son. He has been having strange visions and dreams, and he tells Rachel and his best friend Phil, a science-fiction writer, about them. Nick calls the source of the visions VALIS. One recurring symbol, an ichthys, appears to him. When an orbiting satellite fires a pink laser into his head, Nick rushes his son to the hospital, certain the boy has an inguinal hernia; a doubting doctor examines the child and finds that Nick is right. Following the visions, Nick moves to Los Angeles and finds work at a record label. Two FAP members, from a group called Friends of the American People, come to Phil asking what Nick sees.
