Plot summary
Marvin Mange wants to be an officer like his late father, but he works the evidence room at the Elkerton police precinct. His medical conditions keep him failing the physical examination, and Sergeant Doug Sisk makes sure he hears about it. Marvin is smitten with Rianna Holmes, an environmentalist, and fumbles their first meeting. While alone at the station, Marvin takes an emergency call himself since no officers are available, and drives off a cliff. Dr. Wilder rebuilds his damaged body with animal organs. Marvin resumes his life with his health restored and can perform feats he never could, along with animal instincts. Visiting his friend Miles at an airport, he sniffs out and apprehends a man smuggling drugs, and the media attention earns him promotion to officer under Sisk. Dr. Wilder warns him the operation brought strong animalistic urges.

- Film critic David Manning praised the film when it came out, despite mostly negative reviews elsewhere. In late 2001 Manning was revealed to be a fictitious character created by Sony to fake publicity; Sony blamed a layout artist who entered "dummy text" into print advertisements that was never replaced.
- According to Schneider in the DVD commentary, the overweight cadet played on screen by Elizabeth Branson, who competes against Marvin in the obstacle course, was voiced by an uncredited Amy Poehler.
- The script was originally sold to Walt Disney Pictures, which put the film into turnaround under new management and sold it on to Revolution Studios.
- The film debuted on 1 June 2001 with $19.6 million in the United States, third behind Shrek and Pearl Harbor, and on a production budget of $47 million it grossed $84,772,742 internationally.
