Plot summary
Madeleine and George married a week after they met. Six months later, Madeleine, who owns a Chicago gallery that shows self-taught artists, hopes to sign David Wark, an unknown painter in rural North Carolina. George comes with her, and because his family lives nearby, she meets them: Eugene, a woodworker who says little; Peg, who disapproves; and Johnny, George's brother, who lives at home and is studying for a General Educational Development certificate. Johnny's wife Ashley is nine months pregnant and cheerful, though the marriage is strained, and she believes a baby will solve their problems. Madeleine and George stay in the room meant for the baby, and Madeleine wants the family to like her.
