Plot summary
Two small-time criminals, Parker and Longbaugh, leave Illinois for New Mexico in search of a big score. Inside a sperm donation clinic, a telephone call about a payment of $1 million promised to a surrogate mother catches their attention, and they abduct Robin, who is close to giving birth. Robin's bodyguards, Jeffers and Obecks, trade gunfire with them; the two men get away and the guards are arrested. Robin's gynecologist, Dr. Allen Painter, is brought to a truck stop, where he says the baby is the child of Hale Chidduck, a money launderer, and his wife Francesca. The kidnappers call from a motel across the Mexican border and demand $15 million, while Chidduck's right-hand man, Joe Sarno, arranges bail for Jeffers and Obecks.

- When McQuarrie offered to write and direct for 20th Century Fox at any budget in exchange for full creative control, the studio flatly refused, with McQuarrie recalling their answer as: 'No money. No control. No nothing. They didn't want my input, they just wanted me. For nothing.'
- Several high-profile actors turned down the film's script before Ryan Phillippe, then juggling more prestigious offers, pursued the lead role so persistently that McQuarrie and Benicio del Toro could not turn him away.
- The film's two leads are named Parker and Longbaugh, the real surnames of outlaws Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid; the script originally opened with a far more violent ten-page prologue that McQuarrie cut during pre-production for going too far.
