Plot summary
In the New Mexico Territory in 1892, a Comanche war party attacks the Quaid homestead and kills settler Wesley Quaid and his three children. His wife Rosalee survives, hidden. Captain Joseph Blocker, near retirement at Fort Berringer, is handed the duty of taking the ailing Cheyenne chief Yellow Hawk and four of his family north to their tribal lands in Montana. Blocker refuses the order, reminding his colonel of Yellow Hawk's deeds in the Great Sioux War, then accepts when his pension and his freedom are threatened. He sets out with First Sergeant Thomas Metz, Corporal Woodson, Lieutenant Kidder and Private Dejardin, and has the chief and his son Black Hawk put in chains. At the burned Quaid house the party finds Rosalee among her family's bodies, and she agrees to travel with them toward Fort Winslow, Colorado.
