Ed Flanders

Biography

Ed Flanders was an American actor born in Minneapolis who began his career on Broadway before moving into television and film. He won a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award for his work in the 1973 Broadway staging of A Moon for the Misbegotten, and later earned an Emmy for a television version of that play. From 1982 to 1988 he played Dr. Donald Westphall on St. Elsewhere, a role that brought him five Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor and a win in 1983. Over his career he was nominated for eight Primetime Emmys and won three times. He was also noted for portraying Harry Truman more often than any other actor, including in MacArthur (1977), where he had second billing to Gregory Peck. His films included The Ninth Configuration (1980), Salem's Lot (1979), and The Exorcist III (1990).
